Clan Agnew is a Lowland Scottish family whose historic centre is Galloway, especially Lochnaw in Wigtownshire. The name’s earliest origins are debated: tradition connects it with the Norman d’Agneaux, while another well-known account links it to the Irish learned kindred Ó Gnímh. What is certain is the Agnews’ long Galloway presence, including the hereditary sheriffship and the family’s association with Lochnaw Castle. This collection brings that specific south-west Scottish story to the Agnew pieces available here.
Galloway’s position between the Solway, the Irish Sea and the western Highlands gives the Agnew story a character of its own. The family were established at Lochnaw by the late medieval period and later became prominent in Wigtownshire public life. Sir Andrew Agnew’s defence of Blair Castle during the 1745 Jacobite rising is one of the name’s best-known episodes.
The available Agnew designs include a printed throw blanket, apparel, a cap, tumbler, garden flag, wall pennant, ceramic ornament, coaster set, charcuterie board and novelty license plate. They feature the Agnew name and crest on a Scottish tartan background; the throw is the most substantial home piece in this collection.
