Ó Súileabháin in Irish — from súil, meaning eye, and leamhan, meaning hawk — the O'Sullivans were kings of Munster and lords of the Beara Peninsula in County Cork. As one of the great Eoghanacht dynasties, they commanded vast territories across Cork and Kerry, and their name remains one of the most common in both those counties today. Following the Munster wars of the sixteenth century and the Flight of the Earls, branches of the O'Sullivan family dispersed across Europe — their descendants found in Spain, France, and beyond. The O'Sullivan Beare and O'Sullivan Mór were the two principal branches, both of deep antiquity.
